Boca do Inferno

Boca do Inferno translates to english as “Hell’s mouth”.  Originally this was a cave, but at some point it collapsed, leaving a big sinkhole and an arch. During winter storms strong ocean waves crash in and  the water  bursts out from the sinkhole like an erupting volcano.

Boca do Inferno is situated on Atlantic coast,  just 2km from Cascais in Portugal. If you’re close to Lisbon or Cascais, I would say it’s definitely worth a visit, especially for its fantastic view! There are also some amazing cafes and restaurants close by!

This scenic spot is featured in several movies and paintings and, as a macabre fact, in 1930 the famous magician Aleister Crowley  faked his own death there as a stunt.

“And said the Guide, 'One am I who descends
Down with this living man from cliff to cliff,
And I intend to show Hell unto him.”

― Dante Alighieri, Inferno
